Heidegger
- I strongly believe that personal interaction affects a building. It gives the whole meaning to the space and its presence, without this Interaction between the user and the building it can be regarded as a dead space as it does not serve any purpose or use. I think the art is not in creating a building which all developers can easily do, but it is in involving designers and clients to build according to their lifestyle and needs which benefit them and gives them a comfort feel and a place to be in. It’s about creating and defining spaces which reflect the user’s character and style and thus creating uniqueness in every building.
2. I think language always speaks out the meaning and the various patterns it can be brought about in. It brings out the nature and the context of the whole designing / the building architecture and describes the process and the reasons of it being the way it is. Every line in a drawing or design has a meaning and the multiplicity of these lines create a language which is read and understood by all.
Authenticity is something which lies deep within and can have many layers over it with progress of time and development. But it is very important and unique to develop by keeping the authenticity. We as designers should value the authenticity and design to enhance it rather than destroying it. For example from last class presentation on freedom park, the whole project stays successful as it was designed to leave a mark on peoples mind and relates to the history rather than the site being developed with another skyscraper.
I feel that there is permanence as long as there is human interaction if not there is nothing that is permanent. A building is alive and should suffice the needs of the humans. It should be flexible enough to change and adapt with the new needs of humans which makes it more permanent. Material, structure can just be a small part of it to achieve the whole interactive and flexible space.
Also an example for Heidegger’s point on oneness and fourfold is the Salk Institute has achieved being and dwelling by letting the fourfold: earth, sky, divinities, and mortals to be in their essence. Like Heidegger’s analogy of the bridge, the Salk Institute gathers its surrounding landscapes, and guides its users to attend to the fourfold. The water feature thus serves as a locale that allows a site for the fourfold and spaces with the boundaries of the courtyard as an indication of the beginnings of “its essential unfolding.”
