Norberg-Schultz
Norberg-Schultz is drawn toward Heidegger’s poem because it articulates the ‘un-architect-ed’ mind’s perception of spatial problem & resolution. This recollect composes a library of tangible memories. These memories only place themselves in the human mind as a result of built things, ie: architecture. In short, memorable experiences must be linked to sensory environments, and we as architects get to help create the environments. As I think about my own studio project, this analysis helps me consider the implications of floor, threshold, plane; as it refers to the greater phenomena of ground, horizon, & sky.
Heidegger’s perceptions can reflect the “average user” passing through, occupying our designs. They don’t care about a “moment of juxtaposition.” Instead, what lodges into their memory is how the space transitions – ie: from the exposed outdoors to the sanctuary of indoor space; from the mundane to the sacred; from dark to light.
