About Nancy Cheng

Univ. of Oregon Architecture Department head Nancy Yen-wen Cheng, RA, LEED AP researches how design tools and approaches shape outcomes, with a specialization in how craft and computation can stimulate the creative process. She has developed expertise in manipulating sheet materials to create light-modulating structures and has researched how surface relief patterns can increase convective cooling. She has developed fold and slot joints that give structural rigidity to foldable sheet structures and is eager to apply them to rapidly deployable refugee shelters.

Project Icon

This image represents a number of concepts which I intend to implement in my design process: 1) it represents the concentric relationship of the Hispanic community in terms of larger to smaller( public to private) scales and that the nucleus of that community, the most solid and the smallest piece, is the family. 2)At each level of community there are numerous relationships being established, and while these appear fragmentary, they are in fact forming a fully connected network of connections and relationships which work together toward a common/central goal. 3)It evokes the notion of collaboration via the “ripple effect.” It suggests that the more players there are in a collaborative effort, the greater over all turbulence or effect. Concurrently, the more stone you through into a body of water all at once, the greater the over all ripple becomes.

Farmworker Housing Prototypes

Project Statement: The state of worker housing on farms is currently one of isolation, and poor social and physical conditions. Our goal is to turn these constraints into opportunities by developing a housing model which is mutually beneficial to the farmer and farm worker, which generates a sense of cultural pride and identity, and which supports opportunities for personal growth. We maintain that with the establishment of an attractive, social, physical and economical housing model, we can encourage widespread implementation of ethical worker housing.
