Copyrights: A Huge Mix
In my view and opinion, copyright holds are valuable to the modern global society. They are especially valuable in making sure that people or artists use their own ideas, thoughts, or creativity. In the article Remix by Lessig the author provides the insight of Charles Sims who states, “young creators should turn away from their “derivative” form of creativity. They should focus on something really challenging – “original creativity” (Lassig 91)”. Sims is arguing for artists to use their own creativity to develop and create their work rather than “deriving” it from others ideas and work. In other words be truly unique in the creative process. Start from scratch so to speak. This is where copyright holds can really be helpful and valuable to modern society. Without the copyrights then artists and people work can just be copied and added onto etc. This is almost the opposite as to what is seen in The Amen Break video. In the video it contributes the lack of new music over a past few decades to the harsh copyright regulations. This protects the artist and their work as well as allows true creativity to develop and come out. I do not believe that their needs to any limitation to modern copyright laws or regulations. But that being said I also do not believe that these regulations should be strengthened. At some point if there are too many laws or regulations regarding copyrighting then this will deter artists from creating new art because of fear of persecution and or penalty.

Hi Adam. I understand your opinion on copyright laws and how you think artists should use their own creativity to develop and create their work rather than deriving it from others idea and work. That makes sense. An original idea with more effort, thought, and time put into it is better than an idea that is half your own and half someone else’s. Except I slightly disagree overall with your thought that copyright holds are completely valuable in modern global society. In the way you put it, yes they are. But when it comes to remixes of songs or videos, voice overs on videos, and new original content added to old original content from someone else, copyright laws really limit people’s creativity and spin-off ideas. In conclusion I believe copyright laws are slightly restricting and should be perhaps limited in the case of remixes of songs and videos. It doesn’t mean that that person is stealing the music and claiming it as their own, they’re simply adding something onto it to make something new and just as interesting.

Hi Adam, Though I agree with your view on copyright. I will still like to point out that remixes do represent a very curtail part of our culture. As vine videos, and youtube parody represents the youth and their thoughts. But even with the existence of copyrights laws we can still see the existence of such cultural aspects of our age. Therefore, I think that I am flexible with the copyright laws that are present today and think that they should neither be strengthen or eliminated. The laws today do accepts the remixes of our culture and also protect original creativity which leads it to be just perfect. But if it was strengthen, I can’t imagine our culture without remix vine videos or DJ remixes that plays in clubs or even Youtube parody videos. I mean remixes is part of our culture and strengthening copyright laws would be limiting our culture. Neither, do I think that copy right should be eliminated as they play a vital role in protecting creativity from piracy.

I believe that the two can coexist. I agree that copyright laws should be in place for artists who created the music and released it. If people want to use lyrics or the beats of a song than they should ask permission from the artist if they want to remix that song. I don’t think the laws should apply to people who use artists song for either a montage video or a parody. These are original and creative and the people who made these videos should be noticed. I posted examples of remixes and a parody on my blog. I agree with the last thing you stated, if we have too many restrictions in place, then people won’t create anything because of being in fear of being prosecuted.

Hi, I agree with you that the copyright regulations should not be strengthened but I do not totally understand what you mean by “this will deter artists from creating new art because of fear of persecution and or penalty”. If the copyright regulation is strengthened in the future, I think the artists could feel safer because their artworks will be protected better, so why they will be afraid of creating new art? In addition, I think the copyright regulations maybe could be limited to a certain extent if people use the artworks not for commercial purposes because I think it will not hurt the benefits of original creators.
