Score a summer internship? Congratulations!  You’re officially getting to translate what you’re learning in school into a professional experience. Internships can provide a ton of opportunities, so making sure you put your best foot forward is essential. Read below for some tips on how to make the most of this great opportunity!

Tip #1: Ask Questions

It’s important to communicate openly with your boss. This ensures that you fully understand your responsibilities for your internship. Although it might be nerve-wracking and intimidating to ask them questions, remember they were once in your same position! Most bosses are willing to answer all your questions to help you get more comfortable in your new role. Asking questions shows your interest in the position and eagerness to learn. It’s also going to help you both save time in the long run so you can successfully complete your tasks with confidence.

Tip #2: Be Creative

Have a new idea? Don’t be shy about communicating your creativity! Make sure to ask questions and to present your ideas with humility, but fresh opinions are often valued so don’t think that just because you’re an intern doesn’t mean your voice doesn’t matter! Doing extra research and coming up with creative ideas in a respectful way shows you’re willing to go above and beyond.

Tip #3: Be Patient

It’s easy to get swept up in the hustle and bustle of work when you first start your job. While it’s nice to set expectations for yourself, don’t forget to be patient. You’re in a new environment, with new people and new tasks that you’ve never done before. All of these things take getting used to. Remember that your internship is a learning opportunity; If you make a mistake, take it as a chance to learn and grow!

Tip #4: Make Connections

Even if your internship is remote this summer, that shouldn’t stop you from building your professional network! Participate in virtual social events, engage in small talk during meetings and set up calls with your teammates outside of working hours. Make sure to add your coworkers on LinkedIn, too — you never know when a connection will help with future job openings or letters of recommendation. Aside from professional advantages, you might also create long-lasting relationships that will stay with you far after the internship is over, too.

Tip #5: Keep Track of Your Impact

Make sure to write down and remember all of the different work you are doing! You don’t want to forget all the cool stuff you’ve worked on in six months when it’s time to start writing cover letters again. Keep a list and ask your boss if it’s okay to keep work samples. Some companies may say no due to privacy concerns, but make sure you communicate to your boss that building your portfolio is important to you.

Good luck with your internship this summer! Trust yourself and know that you are there for a reason and that the most growth happens in uncomfortable situations. You got this!
