As the days get colder, it’s important to fuel up and keep your own engines running with food. Thankfully, the University of Oregon has various programs and partnerships, including ones with Food for Lane County, The Student Food Pantry, Hearth and Table Program and Produce Drop Program to ensure student access to food. Food security affects everyone. According to the Oregon Hunger Task Force, around 13% of Oregonians are food insecure. No one should be afraid or ashamed of asking for help; it’s okay to ask for help.

Food for Lane County (FFLC) is a useful, comprehensive and easily accessible resource for students. Students do not have to provide identification of any kind (including school, driver’s license, social security card, proof of residence or proof of income) at FFLC pantries. On the Food for Lane County website, there is an updated map of food pantries, information on how to access food, eligibility and COVID-19 changes. Students, or those incapable of leaving their residences, can have someone else pick up food for them with just one simple form. Food for Lane County’s website has additional resources and links to events, ways to get involved, meal sites and other community engagement.

Additionally, in partnership with Central Lutheran Church, Food for Lane County provides a free meal to local college students every week on Tuesdays, 5:00 p.m to 6:00 p.m. Located at 1857 Potter St, the program known as Hearth and Table supplies students with a freshly made meal. Currently offering pick-up, students just need to stop by and will be sent away with food (entrance at the back of the church, alley-side, between 18th and 19th).

Another resource, located right here on the U of O campus, is the Produce Drop Program. Part of the Feed The Ducks initiative, this event takes place weekly, rain or shine, on Tuesdays from 3 p.m to 5 p.m in the Erb Memorial Union Amphitheater. Bring a UO student ID and a reusable bag to pick up some fresh, free fruits and veggies. Also, don’t forget your mask!

With a short walk down 17th, students can also access the Student Food Pantry at 710 E. 17th Avenue, Eugene. It is open on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4 p.m to 6 PM. Their website states that “any student enrolled at the University of Oregon, Lane Community College, Bushnell University, Gutenberg College or even a distance learning institution” has access to this resource. You can bring your roommates or family members with you for free. Just remember your student ID, bag and mask!

If you need any help, please do not hesitate to use these services. For additional food resources follow @feedtheflockuo on Instagram. Most importantly, remember that you are not alone in these uncertain times. It’s okay to ask for help!
