As young professionals in the increasingly virtual world we live in, it can be trickier than ever to leave a lasting impression while building connections online. Networking is the first, and arguably most crucial step to getting your foot in the door and snagging your dream job. Since we are no longer able to set up in-person meetings in the office or a Starbucks, here’s eight important tips to prepare for and ace an informational interview from your own makeshift home office.
1. Reach out and take the initiative
Typically, informational interviews don’t simply fall in your lap. Make sure to educate yourself on the agency and type of clientele. Then, make your connection with the professional by reaching out via email or LinkedIn. Inquire about an informational interview once you feel it is appropriate to do so and suggest a Zoom meeting or phone call. If the professional agrees, take the initiative to create the meeting yourself once you determine a time and date. A Zoom meeting can be preferable because it is as close to face to face as possible.
2. Don’t be overly comfortable
This may seem silly, but if you’re doing an informational interview over the phone, you should still dress as if the professional can see you. It’s easy to mix relaxation with work, especially now when we can work in bed in our pjs all day, but in order to make the best impression, you should sit up right at a desk and dress presentably for the first time meeting someone virtually. This will automatically make you feel more alert and awake, while also showing you care.
3. Be on time
Even when meeting virtually, being ready a few minutes early can’t hurt. Keep in mind, the professional is taking time out of their day to fit you into their schedule for your benefit, so do your best to be punctual as you would normally when meeting someone in person.
4. Research and come prepared with a list of questions
Don’t assume that the professional will carry the entire conversation. If you havent met them yet, it’s okay to start with basic questions, but as you go along try to get more specific. Opening with questions about why they chose this company, who their specific clients are, and a typical work day is a good starting point. Then eventually move on to with questions like:
– “What kinds of experience did you have, or wished you had, prior to starting this job?“
– “If you were me, what would you be doing right now to prepare for the job
search?”
– “Can you offer me your advice on crafting a top-notch cover letter?”
The conversation should flow naturally, but asking questions is a necessary way of
breaking the ice, gaining information and expressing interest.
5. Take notes
During the informational interview you should jot down some important points, quick tips, names, and numbers when necessary. At the same time, don’t be consumed with notes the entire time, as you want to stay present and absorb the conversation.
6. Speak confidently and describe your passions
If this is a job you’ve taken serious interest in, express that interest and explain why you’d love to be a part of this environment. Get out of this experience as much as you can.
7. Ask if there’s anyone else they’d be willing to connect you with Let the professional know you valued their insights and ask if there’s anyone else they work with that they’d recommend you chat with next. The more perspectives you can gain from a company
or agency, the better. Give the professional time to think about this and let them know they’re free to message you with names and emails of coworkers if they think of some later on.
8. Show your gratitude and appreciation
When wrapping up the conversation, always give the professional a huge thank you.
Additionally, follow up a couple of days later with another ‘thank you’ via LinkedIn or
email. Standing out amongst so many other young competitors isn’t always easy, but an informational interview can be a great opportunity to do so. Getting to know the people in agencies or companies that
you envision yourself in, and picking their brains, is a great place to start!
