Hayward Field and the Running Culture in Eugene

By: Adam Eberhardt

Hayward Field is the most famous track and field venue in the US and arguably the world. The fact that it located in a small city in Oregon is an interesting quirk to outsiders because Eugene is a smaller, more out of the way town. Nonetheless Hayward Field and Eugene boast a history in the culture of running that spans decades. Hayward Field is nearing 100 years in age and it will see significant renovation in which large parts of the stadium will be torn down and replaced. According to historical image, this will be one of the largest renovations to the facility to date. The renovation will change almost 180 degrees of area around the track. The easily recognizable west grandstand will be gone, replaced with a much larger and differently styled west grandstand which according to the UO Foundation will help triple Hayward Field’s capacity to around 30,000 people. This construction will be completed in advance of the 2021 IAAF Championships in which the newly renovated field will hopefully help attracted more spectators to Eugene.
