Overview of Our Project

The goal of this blog and the Podcast that we created was to look at the the African Diaspora in Oregon and create a health assessment. It was important that we addressed the health disparities that disproportionately affect these communities. This includes issues such as language barriers, cultural differences, and funding. In our research we found that there was a dearth of information regarding the health of African immigrants and refugees. Throughout our podcast series we address these issues and how they affected our research as well as the impact they have on the communities themselves. We start our podcast unraveling the history of America’s African Diaspora, both on a national level as well as in Oregon, specifically. We then move onto data collection and representation in healthcare research. From there we talk about the specific health issues that affect the Diaspora and the possibilities for change. We are specifically looking at ways that we can improve the relationship between the African Diaspora and the healthcare system; furthermore, we look at ways in which we can make healthcare more accessible and holistic. Finally, we include two interviews we conducted with experts in these fields of study.
