What is Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)?

Welcome!

If you are wondering what Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is, you are in the right place.  We will discuss what ABA is, what it is not, how to access services, Oregon’s mandates surrounding insurance covering Applied Behavior Analysis services, and much more.

What is Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)?

• Applied behavior analysis (ABA) uses the science of human behavior and learning to address issues of social importance.
• For individuals with autism spectrum disorder and their families, socially significant behaviors are those that are important to the child’s development. The main areas of development are social skills, language, academics, daily living, self-care, and vocational abilities. Research has demonstrated parent involvement results in positive outcomes for a wide range of students across academic skills and social behaviors
• It helps us to understand how behavior works, how behavior is affected by the environment, and how learning takes place.
• ABA offers an individualized and flexible treatment—adapted to fit the needs of each unique person, provided in different locations,–home, school, and community, teaches skills that are useful in everyday life, can involve one-to-one teaching or group instruction
• It uses positive reinforcement for behaviors you want to see (focus on the behaviors you want to see), using a meaningful reward for the behaviors you want to see, leads to meaningful behavior change

  •  ABC’s of Behavior

A—Antecedent, what happened right before the target behavior? i.e. asking/telling a child to clean up toys
B—Behavior, the resulting behavior—response or lack of response to antecedent. i.e. yelling “no,” screaming, not cleaning up, having a tantrum
C—Consequence, what comes after the behavior. i.e. parent/teacher yells (gives attention) to child who is not cleaning up, they send child to room, removes toys and says “toys are all done.”
