People Watching
I have observed around thirty people and I chose the three individuals that I think are the most interesting ones. My chose to sit in front of the UO Lundquist college of business.
The first individual is a Chinese girl who wore a red short skirt, a silky white blouse and a pair of Stuaart Weitzman 5050 boots. I know she is Chinese because I heard her talking on the phone in Chinese. She is very slim, has long auburn color hair and make-ups on her face. I noticed that she stepped into the college of business so I assume that she is taking classes in business. I think that she is very conscious about her physical appearances because I could tell that her make-up is very sophisticated and her apparel choices are great. I also think that she is from a well-off economic background because of the boots she was wearing; I learned that boots of that brand goes around 600 dollar and it is definitely a lot for students like us. Although I don’t quite know her age, I assume she is around 20-25 because most Chinese students finish high school at 18 and directly go to colleges. When she was talking on the phone, she seems to be very excited and I believe that she is in good emotional status. I feel that I share a very similar cultural background with her because we are both students from China; however, I think that financially she might have more disposable incomes than I do.
The second individual I observed is a Caucasian man who wore a shirt that says ‘dropbox’ , a pair of Levis Jeans and a pair of new balance shoes. He was about 6 ft tall, of slim build and worn a pair of black framed glasses. He also had a swiss gear brand backpack with him and he was walking in a really fast pace. I think that he might be a young professional in technology and a geek because he fits into the stereotypical perceptions we have for ‘geeky’ guys. Last summer, I went to visit my cousin the silicon valley and I am under the impression that tshirt+jeans+glasses+backpack makes a geek. He seemed to be very uninterested in everything and I could not really tell his emotional status. He seemed very tired so I guess that his health condition is not the best.
The third individual I watched is a homeless woman. She is black, obese and seems to be suffering from diabetes. She could barely moved and was sitting on a bench. She was clearly in pain because she was making some sounds and mumbling. Although I could not hear exactly what she was saying, I feel that she was asking for help. She was dressed in multiple layers of random clothes and a pair of sweatpants. She also had a shopping cart in front of her that held up her personal belongings. I think that she was probably ill both physically and mentally and she really needs help. I feel really bad that I could not help her and I wish that there are people that could provide professional therapies so that she would be less painful.
From my people watching experience, I realized that I relate to people of similar cultural backgrounds to me the most. I also had a lot of empathy towards people who are homeless or in hardships probably because my mother always tell me to respect and try understanding others. I felt that I also have an underlying desire for better economic situations.
This was a very well written blog. The way that you described every individual was very well done. I could totally picture every person in my head. It was very interesting how you looked at the Chinese girls’ shoes and realized not only the brand, but also went above that and googles how much they cost and related it to her social class. I would also describe a geek the same way that you did. A geek typically wears glasses, has longer hair, jeans, and a t-shirt. And lastly, I also feel bad for homeless people. Where I am from I do not see very many homeless people, but I have noticed that there are quite a few in Eugene, especially in downtown. I also hate the feeling of when you see someone that needs help, but there is nothing that you can do about it. I am almost positive I know who you are talking about in your last description. I am a business major and think that I have seen her near Lillis before. People watching is very eye opening and made me realize how much you can figure out from a person just by looking at them.
Great post!
I admire the way you describe people, because you always illustrate reasons to support your observation which is logic and reasonable. For me, I would like to describe and analyze a people’s favor and taste based on her/his outfits, because I think aesthetic reflects a person’s value. I learnt to think and illustrate the reasons of analysis. I like the way you describe first person, because she is vivid in front of my eyes when I am reading your description.
