Objectives:

Explore one’s own value system

Understand that values are formed from external and internal drives of an individual

Original post:

First, I want to say that almost all of these values are important.  You could flip the list upside down and it would still be true for me in some ways.  It was really hard for me to figure out which ones were most important and which ones weren’t, so I’m not sure how accurate this is, but it’s what I got.

Today, for independence and personal development I’ll go to work and I’ll go to school.  This will also help increase my expertness in what I learn.  Indirectly, it is helping me with my security as well, because if I am hardworking and smart I have a better chance of holding a job and getting my degree.  Health is also very important to me, but there isn’t anything I do about that on a daily basis except for exercise a little bit.

I think that I inherited these values from every part of my life.  My parents, my environment, and my own goals as well.  There are a lot of values I used to see as more important that I don’t as much anymore, and there are values I didn’t think used to be important that are now.  I think it changes with age, situation, environment, the people I am around, and a lot of other factors that I may not even realize.

Reflection:

Since the beginning of the term I’ve had a long time to think about my personal values.  I have realized that they are heavily influenced by my parents and the people I grew up around.  My parents are both very giving people, so “service” being on the very bottom is not accurate, but everything below the line is basically jumbled.  My parents also both value independence in the form of being able to care for yourself and sustain yourself with minimal help from others, which is where I get my own sense of independence.  This isn’t to say that they don’t get help from others, but that they are able to care for themselves on a day to day basis.  I also get my sense of personal development from my parents, who are constantly bettering themselves and pushing themselves to progress in everything they do

These values I have received from my parents have helped me grow as a person.  I’ve internalized a lot of values that my parents hold, and for good reasons.  I look at them and see something that I’d like for myself as well.  Other values, like health and security that aren’t as key for my parents, are valuable to me because of other role model figures that I like.  Health to me is important because I want to be able to be physically fit enough to do everything I want to.

Other values I have misplaced on the list are wisdom and creativity.  A product of personal development is wisdom, and creativity is important to achieve personal development.  Other values come into this as well, but they are not as important.  What I’ve learned since I originally made this list is that a lot of these play with one another in ways that I wouldn’t have thought before.  Every value on this list is important in some way, and to rate it as not important would be a lie for almost anyone.  I feel like I’ve come a long way in understanding how values come into play with art, yet I feel like I still have a long way to go to truly understanding them.

Future Goals:

I’ll continue learning about values and developing them in myself.  I will also continue to explore how they are presented and expressed in art.  Values are very important to keep our society working, and they are so intricate and specific from person to person that they can’t really ever be the same for everyone.  It’s interesting to learn about them and how they influence art and people’s interaction with it.
