1929- Seeing Eye Inc. was founded in the United States to train guide dogs for blind individuals. Since then, the lives of people who suffer from visual impairment has changed drastically due to their highly trained guide dog companions.

1942- Guide Dogs for the Blind was founded on the west coast and started training dogs for wounded service men who lost their sight in battle.

1976-Therapy Dogs International was founded in New Jersey and is dedicated to regulating, testing and registering therapy dogs and their owners to visit places where therapy dogs are needed.

1977-Dogs for the Deaf was founded by Roy G. Kabat. This non-profit organization helped enhance the lives of deaf people by training dogs to alert people who have lost their hearing.

1997-National Police Dog Association was established for the development and certification of canine law enforcement teams.

2011- The law regarding service animals was changed. Dogs are the only animal recognized as service animals under title II and III of the Americans with Disabilities Act(ADA). This allows service animals to be permitted wherever members of the public are allowed to go.
