Dogs in the United States provide services that help people every day. Dogs today can be trained to assist people for a variety of disabilities such as visual impairment, hearing impairment, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer disease and seizures. Authors of the article Dogs for the disabled: benefits to recipients and welfare of the dog state, “ Trained assistance dogs are now established as a means of enhancing the independence and mobility of people with a variety of disabilities.” In addition to the increased mobility and independence, it is also found that recipients report “ increased self esteem, better social activities and a generalized feeling of enhanced physical well-being.” One study found that people with mobility and hearing impairments who also owned a service dog reported improvements in carrying out daily activities such as self-care, chores around the house and general mobility. Along with service dogs there are also therapy dogs that are used to provide comfort and joy for people. According to the American Kennel Club, there are 50,000 registered therapy dogs in the United States and that number is still growing along with the substantial amount of scientific evidence that canine-human interaction produces positive health benefits. “According to findings in the Veterinarian Journal, both canines and humans experience increases in oxytocin and dopamine levels, two neurological signs of happiness, after positive interactions between the two species.” The bond between a human and dog is found to be beneficial for many reasons such as improved fitness by providing stimulus for exercise, decreased anxiety by providing a source of physical contact and decreased loneliness by providing companionship. Dogs also serve as an important resource for local law enforcement, firefighters, mountain rescue, ski patrol as well as local, state and national rescue organizations to rescue and recover missing or lost people. The variety of ways in which dogs are helping people is growing and evolving all of the time and proves to be very beneficial for lives of humans.
