5Rings is a showcase of the innovative manufacturing occurring in UO Product Design and UO Art, and our ability to create meaningful beautiful objects that highlight sustainability. Students each created a ring design which has been produced in five very different materials. Each designer’s five rings are accompanied by ecological impact assessments demonstrating that the same base design has different impacts dependent on those different materials: enameled silver, powder-coated bronze, 3D printed stainless steel, 3D printed multi-color FDM, and dyed 3D printed SLA Resin.
Students have looked to the sport of Track & Field and to the Olympics for design inspiration in honor of the Track & Field Olympic World Trials hosted in Eugene, June 2024.
Concurrent with the ring creation, the class has designed and constructed the exhibition for display at various venues. The first exhibition is hosted by the Obie Companies, Eugene’s principal hospitality area manager, at the 5th Street Marketplace in Eugene in June, 2024. The second exhibition is with the Green Future Club, a sustainable product innovation consortium in Berlin, Germany, in the fall of 2024.
