My Experience In Class

Throughout this course was really fun. I know I learned a lot. I know for sure I learned the stereotypes of East Asian languages like Chinese being the base of Korean and Japanese. It isn’t that Chinese is the base of both but it’s just that Chinese was borrowed in Japanese and Korean. That is something I learned. Some reactions I had for the readings were mostly surprised. Like the one reading for Korea, where children separate from their fathers to study English was very interesting to me. I never knew mothers went to the extent to leave their home country for a long time just to learn English. I know some families did it for a couple of months but for years was shocking. Also the other reading that surprised me was the Chinese Parenting Style. It seems harsh in a western point of view but it makes sense once I think about it and learned from the lecture. This term and class really helped me a lot in developing and learning the culture in East Asia. Especially in Korea when I worked in my research projects. It was very fun in general! Thank you for this great time and opportunity.

East Asian Writing

This is an example of East Asian writing I found while at the theaters. This was found at the Century 17 theater in Springfield/Eugene. As you can see there is some Japanese writing under the Speak Yourself The Final. This writing was on this billboard because the movie was also shown in Japan. It’s a way to connect the people who were watching this showing together.

I feel like I learn the most when we review the readings we did with the iclicker questions and lecture in general. Getting the questions right lets me know that I know the material. If I get them wrong, I know I am still confused on the part I got wrong. Also seeing how our lectures are applied in real life helps a lot to see the bigger picture. Everything else has been going well for me. The class material and teachings are pretty clear.

Hello Class – I’m Yacki :)

My name is Yacki. My real name is actually Yacquelin but I go by Yacki. It’s funny actually because a couple years ago I hated being called by that nickname but now I grew to accept it. I grew up in Beaverton, Oregon and was raised there for most of my life. I did live in California for a while but don’t remember much about it since I was a toddler when it happened.

I’m currently a Sophomore at UO with a plan on majoring with Asian Studies. It took me time to declare this major since I was unsure what I wanted to do as a career but now I’m sure about what I want to be in the future.

A little fun fact about me: This person right here is a K-pop idol (from NCT & SuperM) that goes by the name of Mark Lee. Both Mark and I are birthday buddies since we both have the same birthday. We both were born on August 2nd but the only difference is that he was born a year earlier.

As you can tell, I am a K-pop fan: The pictures below show my experience at the BTS Love Yourself; Speak Yourself concert on May 5th at Rosebowl Stadium.

Their concert was the first concert I attended. I have never gone to a concert before this one. It was a very fun and chaotic experience. Waiting lines were the worst part and lasted longer than the concert itself. Besides that, I was glad my parents let me experience this and I’m glad I was able to meet the artist that I really love.

BTS is currently my ultimate K-pop group that I support and love.

What interested me in East Asian Languages and Societies is the culture of East Asia as a whole and Korea’s culture. As a career, I want to become a teacher in Korea so being able to learn about the culture of the country will help me in the future when I live there. If that doesn’t work out, I’ll become a video editor for an idol company. I’m excited for what the future gives me.

About the course:

There really isn’t anything challenging for this course, besides the fact that the iclicker questions give me anxiety. What I love about the teaching in this class is that most of the information spoken in lecture is on the slides which is a goof way to stay organized in my eyes. Due to this it makes it easier for me to study and learn the information since I like being able to see and read examples clearly. One thing that this class intrigued me is the Korean and Japanese language origins. I always believed it had a base/originated from Chinese since that’s what I heard but knowing that Japanese and Korean are their separate language made more sense to me. As well as the information that Korean and Japanese words were borrowed from Chinese made me realize where my misunderstanding started. This class has really changed my perspective of the culture to a better path.

Even though the iclicker questions give me anxiety, it is a good way to learn better. Being able to be tested and repeat important information is one way I can capture information better. I have to say that this class will really help me learn and understand cultures better.

I’m excited for what other information we’ll learn in class.
