I am so happy that I chose to take this class. Eall 209 helps me to understand the culture difference in East Asia a lot. Especially the difference between Japan and Korea. The thing that makes me feel most interested in the basic sentence structure topic. Japan and Korea use SOV (Subject Object Verb). China and the United States use SVO (Subject Object Verb). The reason I am interested in this part because the Chinese could use a translation app such as google translate to translate English into Chinese. And the meaning of the content is mostly correct. However, My Japanese friend told me that if he wants to use the app to translate sentences to Japanese, it’s less correct than Chinese. This is because the basic sentence structure is different between Japan and the United States. I am so glad to hear many people’s opinions during in-class discussion. Sometimes when I confused about the topic. Classmates’ opinion is really helpful to me. I am so thankful that Kaori used many great examples in the PowerPoints and explanation of examples is easy to understand. The changing things to me are the quizzes and the research paper. There are many articles to read. And this is the first time I paper wrote except for the writing course. Eall 209 makes me want to explore more about East Asia language and culture. In the future, I will take a similar class again.

Part 1

I took this photo at the GT Auto Group in east Eugene. This is a Chinese car dealer. There was a big adverting board on the roof. It shows both the Chinese and English Characters. If we see closer, you can find out that “GT Auto Group” on the top and “广通车行” in the bottom. 广通车行are simplified Chinese character. 广is an adjective that means wide. 通 means open. 车行 means car dealer. After I saw these Chinese characters, ] word phase called 广通八方, 惠泽四海 to come to my mind. The meaning of phase is that people who make a good connection in anywhere then they will get help from everywhere. In class, we learned that the modern Chinese writing system write words from left to right. These are good examples. Besides, some traditional Chinese write things from top to bottom.

 

Part 2

In class, I learned so much knowledge about Chinese, Japanese and Korean. For the learning strategies, normally I will read the PowerPoint on Friday night for review. I think it’s very helpful. On Monday class we tried three different kinds of tea. It makes me feel so engaged with the materials. If I find something I don’t understand, I will use google to find more information.

Hello Class!

Hello everyone. My name is XinzeZheng, in Chinese character is 郑信泽. I am so happy to meet you guys in class. My hometown is in Zhejiang province in the south part of China. This is my third year in the United States. The first year I studied at AEI. A language training center to help the foreign student to learn English. Then, I studied at UO. Now I am a sophomore major in economics. This summer I came back to China for two months. I thrived in two major cities called Shanghai and Chengdu. And I went to a poor village for ten days to be a volunteer to help them.

 

About the Anisa language and society. I chose this class one reason is that I want to know more about China from a different perspective. Also, I am interested to know that the language connection between Chinese and Japanese because I saw many Chinese Characters in Japanese. Right now, I don’t have many questions. The teaching method in this class is that students need to read the article on canvas before class, then they will get some basic knowledge about the topic, in-class students can know more detail about the content. It’s similar to my learning style. I normally read some textbooks before class then in class I could learn it more deep way. This Class has one challenge is that I don’t know too much information about Korea, but I will put more effort into this part. I excited about the rest of the term.
