Reflection Blog

Before I took this class, I have always had the thought of there are no big differences between the countries in Eastern Asia even though I am from China. However, after taking this class in this term, my mind has completely changed. Many topics that we have covered in this class have really expanded my view. For example, the differences in politeness among Eastern Asian languages, gendered language, and different way of thinking based on different languages we speak. Besides, based on my last two researches on politeness and gendered languages in Japanese, I found a lot of interesting facts about Japanese. What’s more, before my researches, I used to watch the Anime like normal people do, now I will start to notice the differences of what the characters say and look them up.

Furthermore, many interesting topics that we’ve covered have really helped me learn a lot about the language, traditions, and culture of my neighbor countries. This class has raised my interest of visiting Korea and Japan and experience their culture in person.

This is the Gravity Auto Area in Eugene, and it is located at West 11th Avenue. It is a Chinese car shop which the owner is Chinese. The name of the shop is above the door which says “聚点车行”. These characters are in simplified Chinese. “聚”  means gather, “点” means point, “车” means car and “行” means shop. It shows that Chinese characters are logographic because each of the characters in the pictures has one meaning and it makes a new phrase when they are combined. Chinese writing is used here because the owner of the shop is from China, and there is a lot of Chinese students in Eugene. So this car shop mostly serves all the Chinese students that live in Eugene.

I only have a little bit questions of what we covered  which is the morphological typology for Korean, Japanese, and Chinese. It is kind of confusing. I feel like I learn a lot and engaging with the materials when I am reading the materials for the quiz. When I am confused about something in class, I will spend more time reading the materials on canvas.

Hello, Class!

My name is Steve Xiao, I am a international student from Shenzhen, China, where is a beautiful modern city in the South coast of China and it is right next to Hong Kong. I am majoring sport business because I am a big sports fan especially for basketball. Besides, I also like to play video games during my spare time.

An interesting fact about me is that in 2016, I decided to come to US for high school. I have been staying in Minnesota for 3 years and I have gained a lot of fun experiences. I also played basketball for my high school, it was a fun journey and I learned a lot.

Since I was born in China, I am definitely interested in my own language and society. I started getting interested in other Eastern Asia language and society because I like to watch Japanese anime especially One Piece, and a lot of my friends like K-Pop. So I want to learn more about our neighbors.

However, I do not have much questions about the class so far. The teaching method is really effective and interesting. For my method of learning is to listen to the teacher carefully in class, take notes, and review for every unit so I will not forget. However, since I have never taken a linguistic class before, I will try to use some other approaches such as reading and researching resources and other materials that are assigned by the professor and  to help me get better.

At the end, I am very excited to learn more stuff with you guys in the future!
