Engagement Blog 3

Throughout the all the lectures in the term, there are serval issues that have intrigued me the most. They are basic characteristics of Chinese, Korean, and Japanese, new masculine gender identities in East Asia, different parenting styles between East Asian parents and Western parents. After the lectures for the basic characteristics of Chinese, Korean, and Japanese, I have better understanding of the fundamental differences and similarities among these three languages. Although ancient Japanese and Korean people learned, wrote and used in old Chinese characters, they are really different in terms of word order typology and morphological typology. For example, Chinese has a word order subject-verb-object while Japanese and Korean have a word order subject-object-verb. For the topic of new masculine gender identities in East Asia, I feel like it is very interesting and new topic that I never notice before. Since today is male-dominated society, how females behavior in today’s society is often more controversial than how males act. As a Chinese, I do not even know there exists a new masculine gender in China called “City Jade Men” and why this new masculine identity arises. Therefore, it is very cool to see there are some changes in masculine gender identities right now. For the topic of the parenting style between East Asian parents and Western parents, one of the important reasons that cause the differences in parenting style is the way to understand the word “successful”. Parents in East Asia trend to make the connection between being successful and having high grades and outstanding jobs. On the other hand, Western parents believe that to be happy is the most important things to educate their children. It seems like that many people in the class have hard time to understand and accept the parenting style in East Asia. However, I want to argue that East Asian parents try to express their love to their children and they care their children although it is really strict and harsh to some people. Additionally, in modern days, East Asian parents have changed this traditional way of educating their children and no longer as harsh and strict as described from the article we read for the lecture.

The way that I have studied for this class is to read the assigned articles and finish the quizzes before class. Then, I will pay attention on the class and discuss the context of the lecture with my classmates after class. I think it is very helpful by doing that. Since I read the articles and did the quizzed before class, I have a brief idea for what we are going to learn in the lecture. Then I let where I can really focus on the lecture to get my questions solved in the next day’s lecture. Additionally, since I am making more and more friends in the class, we will discuss some of the topics from the lecture with each other after class. By doing so, I feel like that I get deeper understanding on what we have learned in the class. In addition, I will take notes with the lecture slides in order to list and summary the major points for each topic. Later on, I will use these notes to study for midterm and final exams.

This class is really changing your sense of “linguistics” as a field. Before this class, I basically know nothing about linguistics. I think linguistics is only about how to speak the languages. Therefore, all that you will do for linguistics is to memorize the words and grammars to speak the languages. However, linguistics is much more interesting than that. For example, we learn how languages are gendered in many different ways. We learn that how languages use to “scare” in North Korea, how languages reflect some social, cultural, and commercial phenomena in the use of oppa in South Korea and high pitch girls in Japan. Furthermore, it is nice that we get some guest lecture on both tea and traditional Chinese medicine. It provides a really cool introduction for more people to know more about China and Chinese culture.

I really like this class and thank you for making such enjoyable class. I am very glad that I take this class as one of my last classes in the University of Oregon.

The first picture is a picture of a Chinese Christian Church that is located in East 19th Ave, Eugene. I took this picture on my way back my apartment yesterday. The characters “雨津” mean Eugene, “基督” mean Christian, and “教堂”mean Church. One interesting thing that I notice it is that there are many ways to translate the name of a city. I think right now most of Chinese people in Eugene will use these two characters “尤金” rather than “雨津” to translate the word Eugene. However, the pronunciations of both ways of translating Eugene in Chinese are very similar to each other. I also think it is kind of cool is how the sign is layout. The sign is like a cross which the row is in Chinese and the column is in English. Additionally, in the class, we talk about many people in China are Buddhist. The religion of Christian is not very popular in China. Since there is a Chinese Christian Church in Eugene which is not a big town in the United States and I see many Chinse people go to this church, I feel like there is a big change in religion today in China. More and more Chinese people begin to know, understand, and believe Christian. Furthermore, I think the bigger reasons that the sign is in Chinese is that they want to have more Chinses people come to the church and get to know some information about Christian.

This second picture is taken after my economic class in Pacific Hall today. I was going to walk out the classroom, then I saw one of my American classmates wore this shirt. Therefore, I think it is a very good example for this assignment. The characters “淘汰” means knockout and “赛” means match. There also is a picture of a dumpling which is a very traditional Chinese food on this shirt. As we discuss for politeness in China in lecture, during the age of Deng Xiaoping, the politeness in China gets influence by Western culture. Then, Chinese people being to use words such as Thank you “谢谢“, Please “请”, and so on.  However, in today, I feel like American society is influenced by East Asian culture as well since the economy is getting more and more globalized and more and more daily things in the United States get influenced by Chinese culture. It is very exciting to see more and more American people wear the clothes with Chinese characters since it is very common to see English in China today. Since more and more things gets globalized,  I feel like more and more American people begin to be interested in Chinese culture. Additionally, more and more Chinese people come to the United States to study, work, and so on too. Therefore, I think more and more clothes companies see this trend of culture exchange between China and the United States, they begin to put Chinese characters in the clothes to attract more people’s attention  in order to sell more clothes.

I think the politeness in Korean and Japanese are very interesting. They are many different ways to speak the same things. It is very unique. Additionally, the issue of tea culture has intrigued me too. As a Chinese, I grew up with drinking tea. Both my parents and grandparents are obsessed with tea. They cannot live without tea. Therefore, it is like a family tradition to drink tea. I did not really think why Chinese people drink tea every single day and why Chinese people cannot live without tea. However, the lecture on tea makes me really think deeper about the reasons and how tea is related with other things and the concept of water is also very special and cool to explore more. So far, I think how this class is constructed is very helpful for me to learn it. Since we have quizzes before the lecture, we have to read and get some basic information for what we will learn in the lecture. By doing so, I am able to have time to think and come up with questions. Then when I go to class on the next day, I can have my questions get answered. Therefore, I am able to remember more information and understand them better. I think I learn most during the lecture since the lecture is very interesting and well organized and professor also explains everything very clearly. Furthermore, I think the research paper is also very useful since it connects what I have learned in the lecture and real world together. It also gives me more chances to meet different people and learn from them.

Last, I hope that we have a chance to talk East Asian food in the class.

Hello, Class.

Hey, I am Feiyi Shao. You guys can call me Faith as well. I am from Anhui, China. I come from a tiny town in Anhui, called Guangde. I am a senior who major in Math in University of Oregon. This is my third year in Eugene, and also my seventh year in the United States since I have studied in the United States since I was in high school. Therefore, I have a host family in Rockhill, SC. They are very nice and kind to me. I really enjoy spending time with both of my families. In my free time, I like to draw and take beautiful pictures. In my three years in Eugene, I have done lots of paintings and taken many lovely pictures. Here is a picture of my both families(Chinese and American).

Here are some pictures that I take for our school.

I am interested in East Asian languages, especially Korean. This is because I really like to watch Korean dramas. I get influenced a lot by Korean dramas. Thus, I want to begin to understand. and know Korean culture and society more. Additionally, I am also interested in the differences and similarities among China, Japan, and Korea in many different ways. There are two main reasons that I want to take this class.

The issue of the differences and similarities of these shared traditional festivals among China, Japan, and Korea has intrigued me. So far, I like the way how this class is taught. The discussion section is really helpful for me since it gives more details for what we are supposed to do. The reading is also fun. Although I am Chinese, there are many surprising facts about Chinese, Japanese, and Korean languages and societies that I do not know before. The quizzes help me to prepare this class before lectures since these quizzes give me the general ideas for everyday lecture. My own approach to learning is going to class, paying attention on class, and reading the lecture slide after class. In this class, I think most of my approach to learning works as well. However, reading before class is challenging for you since there are many hard and unfamiliar words in the reading. Additionally, I do not like to read. Therefore, I want to thank to this class since it forces me to read and help my studies in the future.

I like all kinds of food in East Asian countries. Thus, I wish we can talk about all kinds of delicious food in the lectures later on.
