Mountain cat’s ear (calochortus subalpinus)

Calochortus subalpinus (mountain cat’s ear, subalpine mariposa lily) is a gorgeous perennial herb native to the Cascade Mountains in the Pacific Northwest. It has three distinctively hairy petals, usually white but sometimes with a hint of yellow, sometimes with purple on the inside of the petals. It gets the name ‘mariposa’ lily from the Spanish settlers who first came across it. Its leaves are basal and flat, reaching up to thirty centimeters tall.
