Intro
For my project I decided to go the route of of finding the connection between art, video games, and the potential science that bridges those medium together. I chose to do this mainly because of my interest the digital arts which I am currently studying to major in. Most of everything i researched pertains to the idea of virtual reality and the human perception of reality and actuality.
Perspective in Art
The main idea that video games and art draw from is the idea of a focal point and creating stereoscopic view which is how we are able to see depth. The idea of perspective or “life like” paintings was started back during the renaissance era where focal point and depth slowly began to emerge.
Art in Video Games
What I researched in terms of video games and art, I chose one particular video game, Team Fortress 2, which has a stylistic appearance based on early 20th century commercial illustrations and painters such as Norman Rockwell. TF2 is a first person shooter that’s artistic style heavily influences how the game is played, not to mention that it also heavily ties into the VR science as it was the first video game to support the Oculus VR headset and VR gaming.
Science in Science
The Oculus is a revolutionary break through in the VR gaming industry, with its amazingly accurate head tracking and stereoscopic screens it makes for a return of the VR hype from decades ago, but with actual promise. While the company Oculus is creating their own VR headset, which is soon to be released for consumers, while I was resrearching the Rift the company, Valve, that created the game I was covering as art unveiled their own VR headset.
