Studio Placement Auditions:

Some studios require a placement audition prior to registering for lessons. Please contact the appropriate studio faculty member to find out whether or not a placement audition is required for your instrument or voice. Faculty contact information can be found in the faculty directory on the School of Music and Dance website. For detailed information (e.g., when, where, how to sign up), please see Ensemble & Studio Placement AuditionsIf you were admitted via recorded audition, you must audition during WOW to confirm your studio placement level. 

Ensemble Auditions:

Most graduate music degree programs include an ensemble requirement. Specifics regarding this requirement are outlined in the Graduate Studies section of the Music Catalog.

Information about audition times, sign-up, and what to prepare may be found on the Ensemble Auditions page of the SOMD website. Should audition information specific to your instrument not yet be posted, please check back or contact studio faculty as indicated on the ensemble auditions webpage.


Classes begin on Tuesday, October 1, and you will have until October 7 to register. We recommend that you wait until orientation week—after you have the results of the Graduate Entrance Exams (GEE) and placement auditions—to meet with your faculty advisor and decide which courses to take. However, you are welcome to go ahead and register for MUS 611 Research Methods (3 credits), which is a required course for most degree programs.

The UO academic calendar is on the quarter system, so you will register for classes three times each year (fall, winter, and spring terms). For graduate students, a full-time load is between 9 and 16 credits. Graduate-level music courses carry the prefixes MUS, MUJ (jazz), MUE (education), or MUP (performance) and are at the 500 or 600 level. MUP 700s are doctoral-level performance studio lessons.

Doctoral students: To meet the UO doctoral residency requirement, you must be enrolled in at least 9 graduate-level credits (500-700) each term of your first year.

At our orientation session on Wednesday, September 25, we will discuss these and additional information in-depth; if you have further questions, we will address them then.


If you are a performance major, your studio instructor will be your faculty advisor. For all other areas, check with your area chair to determine who your faculty advisor will be. Please note that many of our faculty are not on staff during the summer and may not respond immediately.
