NOTE:  Information on this page is meant for admitted music majors only.  Non-majors interested in one of these options should contact the Music Undergraduate Advisor for further advisement.

Transfer Students

Transfer students who have taken college-level theory, aural skills, and/or keyboard skills (see * for LCC exemption) are required to take the Undergraduate Theory, Aural Skills, and Keyboard Skills Placement Exams.

* Lane Community College transfer students may receive equivalencies for Theory, SRET, and Keyboard Skills if final term was taken no later than Spring 2016 and grades of B or better earned. For details, contact the Music Undergraduate Advisor.

Jazz Transfer Students

Jazz transfer placement auditions may be needed for incoming jazz studies majors with previous college-level jazz experience.  These auditions are scheduled for Monday, September 18th from 1:00-3:30 PM in Rm. 184.  Students who require jazz placement and will not be on campus until Tuesday, September 19th must contact Prof. Owen directly to discuss alternative arrangements.  Prof. Owen’s contact information may be found on the faculty page of the SOMD website: music.uoregon.edu/people/faculty.

First-Year Students

Incoming freshmen with a considerable background in Theory and/or Aural Skills have the option of taking the Undergraduate Placement Exams in those subjects. First-year students who test out of a portion of the core (ex., Music Theory I, Music Theory II) will be exempt from taking those courses and will resume the sequence at the level at which they are placed (ex., Music Theory III).  Although credit is not awarded for course waivers, testing out may allow students to enroll in alternative coursework during associated terms.

Keyboard Skills placement exams for incoming freshmen are not offered during WOW.  Instead, first-year students who can demonstrate knowledge of material covered in Keyboard Skills I may take a challenge exam at the end of the first week of classes.

All Students

Students with a strong background in piano are encouraged to audition for the honors section of Keyboard Skills.

Study guides for these placement exams may be found on the following web page under Study Guides: https://music.uoregon.edu/current-students/undergraduate-music-students.  Individual placement exam results will be e-mailed to students by Friday, September 22nd, 9:00 AM.
