Info for New GEs
In order for your first paycheck to arrive on time (September 30), several forms must be processed. (Please note that your first paycheck will be for only half a month, as will your last paycheck on June 30.)

Orientation and Meetings
PLEASE NOTE: All new GEs are required to attend the Graduate Employee Orientation on September 19 (details below). You will need your student ID card to sign in and be paid for attending this training. We strongly encourage you to order your student ID card ahead of time. Instructions can be found here.
Teacher Training Workshops
Presented by the Teaching Effectiveness Program. Workshops include “Basic Teaching Skills,” “Teaching for the First Time as the Sole Instructor,” “Teaching Large Classes,” and “Teaching in the U.S. for International Graduate Students.”
SPEAK Test (REQUIRED for International GEs)

Every non-native speaker of English who accepts a GE for a teaching-related position must submit to a test of his/her English-speaking ability. Individuals who score below the minimum scores as noted will be required to attend language support classes and may be subject to limitations on the kinds of activities they may carry out as GEs.

Orientation & Mandatory Training (REQUIRED for all new GEs)

1:00 PM–5:00 PM (Orientation & Mandatory GE Training)
This orientation is mandatory for all graduate students in their first term as a graduate employee. The training is designed to provide GEs with employment-related training to promote understanding of employment policies (such as sick leave, required reporting, and the Americans with Disabilities Act), resources available to employees, and issues related to cultural difference, equity and inclusion, and Title IX policies. This new training program will allow graduate students to start their work as teachers, administrators, and researchers with knowledge of university policies, resources, and strategies for dealing with the challenges of their new work at the UO.
New and Returning Music GE Meeting
Thursday, September 21, 10:00AM–12:00PM

This meeting is strongly recommended for all music GEs. We will address department-specific procedures, including details about workload agreements, sick leave, and use of classroom and building facilities.
