Coming to the University of Oregon from Hawaii 20 year old David Tanaka had plenty of first hand experience with diversity. Today, David works as a tutor for the Center For Multicultural Excellence (CMAE) where he caters to helping minority students. Over the course of a week I sat in on tutoring sessions hosted by David.

For years the Center Multicultural Academic Excellence (or C.M.A.E.) has helped a wide array of students at the University of Oregon. With math and writing tutors available to students seven days a week, C.M.A.E. is a great campus resource.

David Tanaka 20, is a student at the University of Oregon. For half a year now David has been working as a math tutor for C.M.A.E.

It’s important to be precise when doing math. David Tanaka helps students sharpen their skills through hands on tutoring.

As a math tutor, David Tanaka prides himself on his attention to detail. “It’s important to look back over your work. Sometimes you have a brain fart. Let it air out a little, then you can come back.”

Although C.M.A.E. caters to students of multicultural or ethnic backgrounds, they are open to all students in need. David Tanaka describes his tutor experience as, “We kind of wish we saw more students who weren’t a part of minority groups, because we want to see everyone in there”
