Our methods at Howard Buford Recreation Area:

A baseline survey investigates the current status of the Vesper Sparrow within the park boundaries. This information is ascertained with an area search which provides presence/absence data for nests, thus illuminating population status and local nesting habits.
Point counts are used to analyze and compare the degrees of disturbance introduced by different methods of brush cutting, both gas powered and electric. Our plan includes counting Vesper Sparrows present before and after brush cutting. It also includes watching while brushcutting occurs to determine flushing distances associated with the respective management method.
Visitor experience surveys are conducted to gauge the public’s awareness and opinion on park management and utility. This, as well as the aforementioned monitoring strategies will comprehensively elucidate the current needs of the park and potential solutions to benefit all beings who rely on and use the space for its ecosystem services.
