In this section we have chosen 11 different aerial photographs to display the clear changes that the Whiteaker Neighborhood has undergone throughout history. Our photographs range from before the 1960s to 2000. During the 1930s and 50s agriculture was a huge part of the Whiteaker Neighborhood and the first 2 photographs show different plots of land dispersed across the neighborhood. This neighborhood thrived as an agricultural hotspot until the 1960s where commercialization and small businesses began to pop up in Whiteaker. When you take look at the photograph from 1960 and compare it to the 2 older photos above you can conclude that most of the plots of land were developed into small businesses, restaurants and commercial areas surrounded by a growing residential neighborhood. During the 1970s, creating a strong community was the Whiteaker Neighborhood’s main goal. When analyzing the 1971 map viewers can conclude that more residential buildings such as houses and apartments have been developed to meet the needs of the expanding neighborhood. Although more and more people were getting settled in during this time, the mid 1970s saw mostly apartment development. When looking at the 1974 and 1979 maps we can say that the amount of large houses had began to decrease and apartments became the replacement. This change in social demographics suggests that younger people began to move to Whiteaker due to apartment developments while families began to move out. During the 90s there began to be a move towards even more development. Additional small businesses, restaurants and supermarkets were added during the late 90s and early 2000s. When zooming in on both the 1990 and 2000 maps the viewer can see that there are very little differences, just more developed commercial areas as apposed to residential housing.
