About RAINN (Background Information)
A nationally recognized organization that has helped millions of people
What does RAINN stand for? RAINN stands for Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network
RAINN is an organization that was founded in 1994 by a man named Scott Berkowitz, and co-founded by a woman named Tori Amos. This idea of creating something for survivors of sexual assault stemmed from Scott’s passion and interest about this prevalent problem, as well as singer-songwriter, Tori Amos, and her own story of being a survivor. Both founders saw a flaw in the (at the time) current lack of resources and support on this topic, and since then dedicated their time toward making a website to better the lives of others. RAINN exists because this topic is very close to the heart for some people, and someone has to be the activist voice for victims because if no one is, then the problem cannot be fixed.
Being the nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organization, RAINN primarily exists to prevent sexual violence, help victims, and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.
They can be found online (https://www.rainn.org) with free and confidential service, as well as a hotline (800.656.HOPE) and chat that run 24/7.
RAINN matters because its a network of support and awareness. People from all over the world have the chance to educate themselves on a common crime, and get learn about prevention to help look out for others. They can share the knowledge they know with others, and can spot warning signs themselves. For victims, this is a safe haven where the main goal is to support their needs and to listen to what they have to say.
Many people are involved from celebrities, law enforcement, employees, volunteers, to citizens who donate from all around the world. They all work together to make sure this organization is as beneficial as possible, and strive to make change on sexual violence in the world.
