LIBRARY RENOVATION – FALL 2019 The existing Branch Library at 2300 Thurman is a gathering place for the community, and its design is at the core of many of the resident’s hearts. When they think “Library”, they immediately think of Thurman, with it’s combination of brick, glass, and tile. Though the library is too small to handle the human traffic and distribution of books a branch library demands, many are reserved about destroying the local landmark. Rather, what I propose is the combination of the New and the Old: While the existing facades of the first floor are preserved, the inside is gutted and modernized, and two floors are added above. An atrium space extending back from the entrance connects the three floors to light, and the wide open spaces allow for a feeling of escape. However, there are plenty of nooks and crannies to hide in if one wishes. The three floors are distinguished by function, with the first floor being dedicated to a myriad of public uses, while the second floor houses the majority of the books. The third floor is a retreat away from the noise of the public, and contains not only the offices for the employees, but the quiet reading room, the rare books room, and individual study spaces
