Scientific racism

Research

We have long known that the field of anthropology arose out of scientific racist projects of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. Our work in this area explores how colonialism in India served as a vehicle for both the exportation of Euro-American scientific racisms to the Subcontinent, and for the continuing racialization of caste relationships in India today.

Public Outreach

How did race become such a flashpoint in modern society, and why does it remain contentious in our genomic age? In this first-of-its-kind transdisciplinary podcast, cultural anthropologist Lesley Jo Weaver, biological anthropologist Jim Bindon and historian of science Erik L. Peterson join together to explore the history and present-day implications of scientific racism. They unpack our species’ centuries-long debates over how to define physiological and psychological difference, and why it continues to matter today.
