Substitute Teaching

Restrictive Teaching License

Prior to getting your teaching license, a district can hire you on a Restricted Teaching License for up to three years while you work through the licensure program and passage of the content knowledge exams.

Interested candidates need to apply directly to jobs posted by area districts. Districts prioritize licensure in their hiring but will consider candidates who are hiring into difficult to fill positions (e.g. Math, Spanish, Bilingual Education, or lower FTE). More competitive candidates may also have advanced master’s degrees in the content area and/or provide much needed linguistic or ethnic diversity.

Often districts will start posting hard to fill positions in September as “emergency or long-term temporary hire.”

Substitute Teaching Positions

Postings can be found on District Job Sites. Applicants typically must apply to the substitute pool for the district.

Applicants who have not completed a teacher education program or been licensed in any state must have an employer co-apply for a substitute teaching license. You can contact a corresponding education service districts (ESDs) about registering or co-applying as a substitute teacher in the ESD’s service area.
