The Directed Reading Program (DRP) is an organization that pairs undergraduate and graduate students together to undertake independent study projects. Pairings are made based on the information given on the mentor and mentee applications. After pairings are made, mentors select a topic and reading material based on the mentee’s interests. Pairs meet weekly to discuss material for the duration of winter term. With the guidance of their mentor, each undergraduate prepares a short talk based on what they read over the 10 weeks. The program culminates with a pizza dinner and presentation session at the beginning of spring term.
Some Reasons to Participate:
- You’ve always been curious to learn about some particular topic in math.
- You will gain valuable independent study skills. Reading and learning from a textbook on your own is much different than learning in the traditional classroom setting.
- You will get an opportunity to meet a graduate student and to learn more about what it’s like to do math outside of a classroom setting.
Who Should Participate:
Anyone who is interested in learning more mathematics should consider participating! We strive to offer a variety of projects at a variety of levels and encourage you to apply wherever you may be in your mathematical journey. We especially encourage those from underrepresented groups to apply.
