In addition to our general biweekly meetings, we also host various social or larger community events throughout the year!
Spring Panel 2022: Adoption and Intersectionality
In Spring 2022, ASU hosted a panel discussion on Adoption and Intersectionality with three adoptee professionals. We explored three main topics: Adoptee Perspectives on Intersecting Identities, Finding Belonging as an Adoptee, and Adoptee Identities in the Workplace.
2021 CONNECTION: a virtual conference about adoption
ASU’s most ambitious event to date, 2021 CONNECTION was a two-day virtual conference that featured a keynote speaker, full-length film screening, student-led workshops, panel discussion, and more.
DisOrient Film Festival
In 2019, DisOrient Film Festival of Oregon showcased two feature films centered around adoptees. Some of our members volunteered at the film festival and networked with event coordinators and film makers. The films and live stream Q&A’s with directors enabled us to broaden our perspective of adoptees and other Asian Americans’ experiences.
Holt International Dinners
Once a month, the Adoptees Meets World group, associated with Holt International, hosts a dinner for local adoptees to connect and enjoy a meal together. Members from our organization are invited to attend these dinners. This gives members of our group a chance to get to know other adoptees from the local community and connect with more resources related to adoption.
Holt International Workshop
We invited staff members from Holt International, an adoption agency based in Eugene, to lead us in a session inspired from material they utilize at their annual summer camps for adoptee youth. Participants were able to explore personal meaning of their adopted and birth names, as well as other links back to their birth cultures.
ASU x OSU: Somewhere In Between
We collaborated with an adoptee from Oregon State University on an event to further awareness and validation of experiences of adoptees within the Asian Pacific American community. The event included the screening of a short film, a speaker panel with a diverse mix of adult adoptees from the Seattle based organization: Adoptees for Justice, and opportunities for discussion and networking. The event was open to all and attracted people from around Eugene, Corvallis, Seattle and beyond.
ASU Ice Cream Social
To celebrate our first year as a club, we held this public event for the UO community, allowing students the opportunity to be introduced to the club and further the awareness of our group’s presence on campus. Adoptees were also able to be exposed to the club for the first time and connect with other adopted students through the fun and delicious event.
