About Me

1

My name is Ian Lawrence Campbell. Thank you for checking out my university blog. I’ve organized this site to reflect 3 areas of interest (Internship, field notes & experiences, and teaching interests) that emerged during my graduate affiliation with the Departments of Conflict and Dispute Resolution and Global Studies.

The story of my graduate tenure at the University of Oregon draws on multidisciplinary studies constructed around 2 separate trips to the Middle East in 2016 and 2017-2018 (during 14 months in Israel, the Palestinian territories, and Egypt).

These experiences along with classwork contributed to the development of my master’s thesis research that examines Palestinian responses to President Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. My research adopts a constructivist theoretical orientation to explore Palestinian digital media. While I acknowledge the precarious nature of the American declaration, I do not claim to be a legal scholar therefore my analysis focuses primarily on digital communication constructs.

Specifically, my intellectual lens focuses on a relativist view of truth and knowledge couched in the belief that meaning is attributed to language, and reflects both the time and space of the community in which it represents.

Findings from my research point to an epoch Jerusalem discourse that emerged in response to humiliation and the tyranny of communication. Research outcomes recommend interventions for promoting digital empathy in digital spaces to support open dialogue across diverging points of view.

Please feel free to reach out with questions or comments, or join me during my oral defense on December 4, 2020.
