bask in the legendary light of tuscany

“It was an intimate tour that took us to places and people we would NEVER have found or met on our own. I particularly loved our UO Leader’s enthusiasm, willingness, and skill at making everything we were interested in happen while taking such good care of us. I can’t say enough about how wonderful this whole time was — precious and full and revealing.”

2019 UO Educational Tour participant

Join us for a unique journey into the remote Tuscan countryside, visiting isolated abbeys, beautiful hill towns and staying in a charming country villa immersed in the vineyards and olive groves just outside Siena. You’ll take day trips to different locations where UO tour leader Colleen Choquette-Raphael will help channel your inspiration into various modes of expression, including journaling, photography, drawing and painting. You will be accompanied by UO Siena Center’s faculty and students for a tour of historic Siena. A local guide will also join you throughout your travels to enhance your understanding of each place visited.

This unique tour has been planned to prioritize:

  • Uncommon itinerary that combines must-see sites with local interactions and hidden gems
  • Expert-led learning about photography and creative expression, including optional small group and individual mentoring sessions
  • Relaxed pacing with the majority of nights at a single Tuscan countryside villa
  • Small group – limited to 16 total travelers – to optimize individual experiences and maximize learning opportunities

Open to all adult learners. UO alumni status is not mandatory. To see the brochure with full itinerary, please click here. You may email Katie Jo Walter with any questions at: kjwalter@uoregon.edu

The focus of the tour is to connect to the landscape, history and unique culture of Tuscany while sharing how we might record our experiences as travelers.Various impressions of Italy as seen in art, literature and film will serve as a platform from which we will engage in documentation practices. The concept of a travel journal is a theme we will visit often as we compare and contrast the doumented experiences of previous travelers to the region with our own.
Travelers/participants are invited to capture and chronicle observations using a variety of media, including but not limited to, film and smartphone photography; video; painting; collage; sketching; blogging; writing, or performance. UO College of Design faculty and photography instructor, Colleen Choquette-Raphael will accompany the tour to offer inspiration and assistance in the conceptualization and realization of these activities. Optional outdoor studio sessions and feedback discussions are open to any and all levels of experience from beginning to advanced. One may participate directly in these activities
or simply engage in the conversation as a creative onlooker. Often simply sharing ideas is the most direct way one can engage in creativity!

We plan to include a great deal of content on this page; we hope that after reviewing it, you will decide to join us. Happy scrolling!
