W2D5: Janne Underinner & Tony Johnson

The Cycle of Healing

Dr. Janne Underinner and Tony Johnson are co-founders of the Northwest Indian Language Institute (NILI) through which TRaiLS itself was born.  TRaiLS represents the 25-year anniversary of NILI & the NILI Summer Institute. Their talk reflects back on the prior 25 years while also allowing some time for themes of what’s to come. Tuxámshish, Dr. Virginia Beavert after whom TRaiLS (the Tuxámshish Revitalization Learning Series) derives its name, also speaks. She emphasizes the name of NILI, the Northwest “Indian” Language Institute, and highlights the potential values of indigenous language educators in the community. Watch this video for insights on connecting community, indigenous language teachers/learning, and considering how community, teachers, and institutes might work together towards language revitalization.
