Similar to how photography is used as a form of documentation, drawings can be used as a way of telling stories and recording histories. It is important to remember that you don’t have to be an expert drawing artist; you just need to be clear in conveying your story.

As you begin to think more deeply about the story you want to tell, make sure to identify particular details that are significant to communicate.  Here are some helpful things to think about as you approach telling a story through drawing:

  • Draw something important of the story. Identify particular details, objects, items, that are important to the story. For instance, this can be like a medal someone received for being brave in combat, or an old letter that has been kept in a family for centuries, etc.
  • You can draw nature, animals, people, machines, maps, buildings, etc. as a way of telling your story.
  • You can draw a series of pictures as a way of telling a story in sequence, or choose to only express a story through one drawing.
  • You can choose to include some text for each one of your drawings.
  • Consider using a comic book approach.
  • If your story is for a community, try community mapping.
