Schedules and Lightning Bolts for Bowie

Posted in The Connections

Did you hear the news?

David Bowie is now being honored with his very own constellation.

This honor puts Bowie on par with the gods. His constellation is up in the sky along with Poseidon’s and Hercules’. Now, not all people agree that he deserved it, but nonetheless he got it.

The lightning bolt shaped constellation pays homage to Bowie. This is a beautiful form of tribute, but why does Bowie get the honor while so many others are not named in the sky? Well, I would argue impact as the reason.

David Bowie was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1196, but that was not his only accomplishment. He was a writer, an actor, and the original “pop chameleon.” I can’t say that I listened to a lot of his music, but I can say that I am impressed by all that he accomplished in 69 years.

How does a person make an impact as broad as Bowie’s?

How does someone get their legacy in the sky?

Well, I think that those people are goal achievers. They don’t just chase after a goal, but they get there.

I want to take that thought one step further and say that these people are also schedule makers. Too far? Let me explain.

We spend our whole lives making goals, dreaming of who we want to be.

Then, “real life” gets in the way. We become “yes men” (or women) who let other people dictate the road to our goals.

What are your goals? Figure out your priorities, and then make the time for them. When you know what you need to say yes to, it is a lot easier to say no to the things that don’t fall under that category. In order to be that kind of person it takes a schedule. You need something to refer to and to keep you on track towards what you truly want.

Schedules aren’t the snooze I always thought they were. They are a tool that allows us to be able to to say “yes” to the right things and “no” to the wrong things.

When we do that, we get closer to our goals. We get closer to our legacy.
