Objectives
- Become acquainted with copyright as a historic, cultural and economic paradigm and its value and pertinence to creative works.
- Explore the changing nature of copyright in the context of “Remix Culture”
- Examine your own and others values and paradigms of ownership and authorship of cultural media.
This is the art I created. The words I chose were thoughtful, Deep, Splatter, Personal, Lion, Colorful, Nature, Local, and Flow. Whether this could be art or not is really depending on the person. I think it is art, I do not think it is very good art, but it is art none the less. The main problem is I didn’t make any of these images, but rather found them online and without the permission of the original owner used them to create this collage. I think this is art and I think that anything that is mashed together is art, even if it isn’t very good.
Reflection
This project was to discover my own artistic value and to understand the copyright laws and how they affect artists today. Copyright laws affect everyone today because what is considered an original work might not be because of how similar it is to someone else’s work or that combining two completely different works of music together to create a whole knew genre of music that no one else thought of before cannot be created because of the copyright laws, no matter if the creator is selling it or not. The second part was to think about myself and to think, if I was an artist what kind of artists would I be? What aspects of my life would I put into the work, and that is how that combination of art was created. All of those aspects would define my art in some way or another.
This project help me with the objectives by showing that combining things together is art, even if I didn’t create each initial piece of art in the collage. I think that this project has forced me to think about my own life and the things that are not necessarily original works, but more combinations of multiple works put together in a way no one else thought of before. This has made me think about what should be changed in the copyright process in order to account for people to create works that are original, just the individual pieces aren’t original. I wish I had an answer in order to combat this but for now I am just forced to ponder it.
Future Goals:
I will now look out for works that are combinations of originals and then give them recognition for the art that they created, especially if it is public art like the next section talks about. I will also ponder what to do about the copyright laws for a long time until something can be done to fix it.
