Reflection:
Some components of creating my map stories helped me understand Never Let Me Go differently because it helped me think about the significance of specific scenes/parts of the story. When reading the story I tend to just focus on the obvious messages being conveyed but something that we do in this class is we discuss different scenes and in those discussions we tend to learn newer meanings that we weren’t able to pick up the first time we read it. I connected this to my writing sources in my story map but choosing one specific part of Never Let Me Go I wanted to write about. Each slide I decided to write for my story map connected to Tommy, Kathy and Ruths background as well as their trip to the Norfolk coast. My map narrative helped bring a different perspective to my audience by talking about two different scenes that happened in the Never Let Me Go, in one slide I talked about where Tommy, Kathy, and Ruth grew up and how that helped them become the people they are now. In my second slide, I wrote about their trip to the Norfolk coast where they found that old abandoned boat, on that trip that’s where Tommy and Kathy learned from Ruth about deferring their donations. Which then leads to my third slide which was about Tommy and Kathy finding Madames house. This was where Tommy and Kathy find out that they can’t defer their donations and it was just a story that was made up. It is a sad thing for both of them but it connects to their trip by Norfolk by giving Kathy and Tommy the answer to the question they had been wondering about.
The Voyant application was actually quite confusing to me at first, it was difficult for me to figure out how to make different charts and graphs. Once I input the words I wanted to use for my Voyant visualization, it was hard for me to try and figure out how to find different pictures to use. But once I was able to do this, it was very helpful to my Story map. I used the Voyant application to make a graph that used the words, boat, madame and Norfolk. I thought that these words were 3 words that decided my storymap well. One way I tried to engage with my audience thought my writing style was by thinking about what questions I had when I was reading Never Let Me Go. I wanted to analyze scenes in depth and see how I could connect them together. By finding examples from the book, that was helpful for me to engage with the photos and I’m hoping that goes the same way for my audience.
