HPHY 409 Practicum in Athletic Training is a very hands-on class where students have the opportunity to work at various clinical sites to gain experience and learn more about athletic training. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all of the practicum sites closed, meaning students now had to complete their required practicum hours online. As an alternative to in-person clinical experiences, I created a variety of online opportunities to gain practicum hours and one example was the weekly peer meetings, which is presented below along with an example of one of the weekly prompts! I also provided students with the solution to the prompt after the assignment due date, so they could compare their answers.
Weekly Peer Meetings
Format: (phone or Skype/Zoom/Teams/Facetime)
Hours: You will receive 1 hour of practicum credit for every meeting for a total of 9 practicum hours
Additional info:
- Meetings start week 2 and end week 10 (9 total meetings)
- You will be notified of your assigned classmate every Sunday for the upcoming week through a Canvas message
- See assignment on Canvas
- You receive 1 hour of credit for each meeting, but that doesn’t mean you are required to talk to each other for the whole hour! I hope you will take this opportunity to get to know each other and learn from those who have previously taken this course in its normal format so you have a better idea of what the course looks like once we are back to regular in-person classes!
- The prep questions are different from the follow-up questions and you only need to submit the follow-up questions to receive credit. The prep questions are to guide your discussion when you talk to your classmate and the follow-up questions are the proof the meeting occurred and a brief couple sentence description of anything you talked about!
- Even though this is a partner assignment, every student needs to submit their responses to the follow-up questions listed in the assignment. You can simply upload a screenshot of your phone call/video conference to the Canvas dropbox and then put your answer in the submission comments if that is easier or you can put it in a word doc and upload that.
Skills/Benefits:
- Meet your classmates/make friends
- Oral communication skills
- Developing opinions/ideas and verbally discussing them
- Overcome phone/video conference anxiety
- Gain confidence in communicating with a variety of students
- Professional skills: Mock interview practice and peer resume review
