    College Side Hustles

    May 9th, 2017

Have you ever thought that you could use some extra money? College students are usually active and go out a lot. Whether seeing a movie, going to a music concert, or grabbing a bite to eat, these activities can be expensive if they are done often.

Here is the good part. There are a lot of ways college students can make money.

    • Take Surveys.
      •  There are a couple websites that are looking for opinions of products from college students. Basically, they will ask you questions and then you get paid for each survey done. What could be better than making a couple bucks for a short amount of time? Go to these websites to sign up. http://vipvoice.com or http://swagbucks.com

    • Participate in Research Studies.
      • There are a lot of opportunities to be a “guinea pig” in the UO Psychology department. Usually, there is only one visit and you make between $10 – 20.

    • Resell Textbooks
      • Even though selling textbooks to the Duck Store doesn’t get you a lot of money back, it still is something. How I see it, a little money is better than nothing! Or you can sell textbooks on the Facebook page, where you can choose the selling price to make more money.

    • Sell Video Game Accounts
      • If you’re a gamer, try selling your video game accounts on gamer forums or eBay. Tons of popular games like World of Warcraft, Second Life and League of Legends see players making big money selling their accounts. You can also sell the virtual gold, weapons and real estate you’ve bought or earned over the years for a real-life profit.

    My Summer Plans

    May 3rd, 2017

Hey y’all! With 5 weeks left of school, summer is quickly approaching. This week’s post will discuss my summer plans. To start off the summer, I will have a job in the Sierra mountains for six weeks in the summer as a camp counselor. I am assigned to the Waterfront area and will teach classes and lifeguard during the scheduled free-time each day. This will be my fourth year at the summer camp and I love the camp because the location is beautiful. In fact, Lake Huntington is one of the best sailing lakes in the world.

    View of Lake Huntington

I will come back from summer camp and then I will pack my bags to study abroad in London for four weeks. I am super excited to study abroad because it has been a long time since I have been in the UK and I have relatives in London who I haven’t even met. What is cool about the program is that I will be taking two classes with the same group of people. The first class is led by UO faculty teaching Social Entrepreneurship and then another class about theater. While in London, I am excited to meet new people and travel around Europe. One of the places I really want to go to is Paris.

Because summer can be so long, I suggest you should spend time with friends and or family to pass the time. Or, you can learn something new.

Here is a post about how to overcome Summer Boredom.

    Studying: A Love Hate Relationship

    April 26th, 2017

    Image result for studying

Part of college is studying. There are a lot of different ways people can use to study for their classes and learn the information necessary to pass the class.

For me, I have multiple ways I study depending on the class I am taking. I have studied by myself and have formed study groups. Both of these ways have helped me, but sometimes I tend to do one of them more often. This is because sometimes I am not able to find the right people to study with in my class or I want to have a study session with just myself. Studying with others can be beneficial because multiple people work together and can make interesting questions to increase the understanding of what was discussed in the week’s lectures.

One tip I would give for choosing study buddies is finding people in your class who you get along with and find people who take the class seriously, so you don’t find the wrong people to study with.

    Ways to Lower Stress

    April 18th, 2017

College can be a stressful time. Between classes, sleep, and a social life, being a student is asking a lot. I have made a list of a couple ways I use to lower my stress.

    1. Exercise I love to walk around the city of Eugene or work out at the awesome REC that is free for all UO students. I love meeting new people while working out. If you want to have a great walk, I recommend walking around Autzen Stadium.
    2. YouTube When I am feeling a need to chill, I watch a couple of videos on YouTube. I love being able to laugh while doing something I love, social media.
    3. Listening to Music My favorite thing to do for de-stressing is listening to music. One of the reasons I listen to music is because I like to share my music taste with others while getting new music suggestions from my friends. If you see me on campus, most likely I will be listening to music.
    4. Plan I find that if I schedule my week out, I will be less stressed. This is probably because I then know what to do each day.
    5. Treats After I have finished a big assignment or finished the day’s homework, I usually buy myself a treat from one of the vendors on campus. This allows me to tell myself “Hey, I’ve done a good job!” and will allow me to keep working hard.

Here are also another couple low-cost ways to manage stress.

    Why Traveling is Lit!

    April 11th, 2017

My family loves to travel. I have practically grown up on airplanes because I have traveled around the country so much. Each summer, I would travel to Madison, Wisconsin. There, I would spend two weeks visiting my grandparents and cousin. I love traveling because I am able to experience new places and notice how their culture is different than mine. This is one of the reasons I chose to study abroad in London this summer. I know I am going to have so much fun! 🙂

One of the most memorable trips I have gone on was a trip to Italy with my family. There, we toured Rome and other famous cities and really experienced Italian culture. We also got to stay in authentic bed and breakfasts in the middle of the city square so we could see how bustling downtown was.

Here is a post about a trip to Barcelona, Spain.

    Discounts in College

    April 4th, 2017

There are many discounts offered to college students that some people might not know of. This post will discuss a couple of discounts available to students specifically around the UO community.

Everyone knows that it is important to have a computer for college and both Apple and Microsoft offer education discounts for college students.

Also, UO students can get Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel …) for free! Yes, I said free. Usually, this can cost over $100, so by getting these applications through UO, there is a lot of money that stays in your wallet.

Movie Theaters have discounts for students. Go to the Valley River Mall and they won’t even ask for ID. This is a great deal because movie tickets can be expensive and nobody wants to pay for overpriced movies. Also, Ducks After Dark is put on through the Center for Student Involvement and screens a popular movie every Thursday starting at 9 in the EMU for free. Catch a good movie with friends while sipping on a soda and munching on some popcorn.

    Housing

    March 30th, 2017

Choosing where to live each year while attending the UO can be a big task. It sometimes can be difficult to find the right roommate or the best place to live. Apartments can be expensive depending on location and typically college students haven’t had to pay rent before, which is a new thing for many. Here is a link for alternative housing options, rather than living on campus. https://studysoup.com/blog/easy-college-solutions/alternative-housing-options/.

For me, I have loved living on campus. As a second year student at the UO, I have lived on campus for two years, Hamilton East and Carson. Ever since I stepped foot on campus during Week of Welcome, I have loved being involved on campus. By living on campus, I was able to create so many friends from all over the country. I also live on campus to be more involved. For example, I am the Finance Rep for Carson’s RHA (the hall gov on campus). RHA stands for the Residence Hall Association, and all colleges in the USA are members. By living on campus, I am more informed of events being put on by other students. For example, each week a movie is shown in the EMU for free.

I prefer to have roommates because I enjoy communicating with people. Even though I didn’t have a roommate for part of the year last year, I prefer a roommate because I started to get lonely while in the room without one. Even though someone is your roommate, it doesn’t mean you have to be their best friend. Because I live on campus, I don’t really have any utility expenses due to my meal plan.

    How to Increase Productivity

    March 24th, 2017

    Image result for productivity

When I started college, I was not productive at all. I would decide that studying could wait and instead, I should just watch a couple YouTube videos or catch up on a couple episodes of my favorite shows on Netflix. I realized during my Fall midterms that I needed to change. I said to myself that I would change and find a way to increase my productivity. During the Winter term, I was able to increase my productivity. I hope you will put these four tips to use and increase your productivity!

    • Use a Planner

I started to use a planner for my Winter term and noticed due dates were written down, I was able to keep myself accountable for what I would do each day. On Sunday of each week, I would plan out which homework assignments I would do each day. I also found that having a task completed and having it checked off was kinda fun.

    • Use Airplane Mode

I like to read magazines, and a CEO of an airline wrote he turns on “airplane mode” for his phone when he wants to get work done. If you want to study hard-core, you can turn off wi-fi so you can’t say to yourself “I’m going to only check Facebook for five minutes”. We all know that “five minutes” will turn into half an hour or even more. The constant distractions of social media and the news pull us out of our focused working space and make it harder to be efficient.

    • Exercise Before Homework

Studies have shown that exercising before a workout is very beneficial. Exercise improves blood flow to the brain. It doesn’t matter what exercise is done. You could run, swim, lift weights, play basketball, any movement will make your brain ready to do the dreaded reading or whatever is assigned to have done before the next lecture.

    • Reward Yourself! 🙂

After I have done my homework for the day, I reward myself. Sometimes the reward is getting Ben & Jerry’s from Grab-n-Go or playing computer games on my Steam account. I also break up my readings by having a mini break after reading a certain number of pages (like 10 pages or finishing one chapter). By rewarding myself, I am able to have fun while getting my work done.

    Welcome to my blog!

    March 14th, 2017

    Hey yall!

My name is Alex Tucker and I am a Sophomore at the UO. I’m studying Pre-Business and getting a minor in Media Studies. Like many UO students, I am from the Bay Area, specifically Menlo Park. It is about a 45 minute drive to San Francisco. I hope to eventually work at a social media company in their marketing department.

In order to have my resume stand out from others, I started working as a marketing intern for StudySoup during the fall term. It’s a company that allows students to sell their notes and study guides to other students who are in need of extra help in their classes. It’s been a great opportunity for me, learning a lot more about marketing and just getting a better sense of what a startup company and culture is all about.

Just wanted to give a quick introduction of myself. Hope y’all have a great day and I’ll post again soon!
