Importance of Computer Science in the Classroom

Hello,

Welcome to our website! This website will guide you through our 5 day lesson plan that integrates the use of computer science into a language arts curriculum.

The importance of integrating computer science into the classroom is becoming more essential as our society enters a digital age. As new technology comes around, careers are changed and molded to work with and around technology. This also means that the introduction to technology brings in a whole new sector of career paths that revolve around technology itself. There is a deficit of people working in the industry of technology, so by educating students on practical use of technology and creation of computer programming, students may strike an interest and find themselves wanting to look further into the field of technology. However, even if students do not find themselves following a career path towards the technology industry, these practical skills of computer science will allow for creative and critical thinking processes to develop.

At present, only 35 states allow students to count computer science courses towards their high school graduation (Daydream Education), which only perpetuates the deficit we see within the industry of technology and lack of creative and critical thinking skills. This website will guide you through a 5 day lesson plan that not only emphasizes computer science, but also integrates it into standard curriculum. As a teacher, you must find creative ways to integrate the now essential but highly disregarded, subject of computer science, into lessons of other subjects. This lesson plan will walk you through a language arts curriculum based lesson that emphasizes the use of storytelling using: Setting, Plot, Characters, Conflict, and Theme. However, the students will write their stories by creating their own computer program.

Please peruse through our website to see what we, The Storytellers, have to offer you and your students! We believe and support the idea that the ability to innovate with technology is vital for students’ future success and ability to make a difference in a global society.

Sincerely,
Abby Hyland, Rosie Smith, Nicole Ganetsos, Erin Sargent, and Josh Biederman
