Final Website Reflection

Final Thoughts:  As this term comes to a close, the website renovation (as I fondly call it) has had many unforetold issues arise that I have fought bravely against.  Wits at hand, managing code has finally become a sensible character.

The major troubleshooting that no one could have been warned against, was the fact that the template developer had not updated the current code for the twitter feed making embedding very difficult.  Both Twitter and Instagram had changed their API (application programming interface) since the creation of the chosen template and the template author did not include this update.  Learning from this, I would image other template creators would have similar issues, and will look for it if I have the need of an additional template.  Instagram’s new API made it very difficult for a live stream to be implanted into a website.  I had to use a widget in order for it to work; looks great though, and it worked out!  Yeah!  Snapwidget, for those who want to know.

That being said, the template was extremely adaptable to my needs.  The simple responsive template that I stumbled across took nearly two and a half weeks to find; but it was well worth the wait.  Making and manipulating the site was tedious at times, most especially when inserting more images of my work.

Self representation is always hard.  Mostly, I want it to be perfect, but alas, that never happens.  As with a website, resume, cover letter, sometimes you just can’t quite capture what you want.  One reason I like having a website as opposed to other forms of self-representational social media is that I can show my artwork.  This, more than anything, allows me to show who I am as a visual artist.  Transitioning from my old website to this new one was a bit hard as well, for this very reason.  The previous site was more lucid and raw.  The new site has way more functionality, but less personality, I think.  This only means that I will not stop until I completely transform my new site into something with similar semblance as the prior!  Insert chuckle.

I look to the future through this process, and see myself creating business cards or other collateral to draw people to my site/art.  Physical representations of the website and my work.  Continually updating the site is important (as is the social media I have created for this project).

Personal Evaluation: My participation in this course was the opposite of minimal.  Every week I strived to get at least one complicated thing out of the way and several small technicalities corrected.  Though I did not follow my timeline exactly, I think I adapted pretty well.  There were some unforeseen obstacles and thoughtful additions that made the structured timeline move towards the back burner as the term progressed.  I think it helped to guide my decisions, but ultimately, with the term progressing, I began to have a mental map of how to fix what was necessary, and the timeline aided in keeping that mentality on track.  Some weeks were more condensed than others on this project, as working with Dreamweaver for an exceptional amount of time made it somewhat difficult to return to the computer for longer than 3 hours at a time.  Personally, working within this new(ish) media, that of digital and web-building, has gotten me excited to work on other projects with the applications used for this project.

I am also very excited to make my logo stamp made!!  I hope to make it myself, but it will be a part of my signature moving forward with my illustrations.  Smileyface.

Midterm Evaluation Report

The project that I proposed for this class was to create a website.  The purpose was to, and remains to be, an interactive extension of my artwork and creative side.  The process in finding a template that best fit my personality as an artist was extremely tedious!! I managed to find one on Themeforest that had the minimal look I was going for and it had pretty good interfacing as far as maneuverability.  Using Dreamweaver with the purchased template has been a huge learning experience, looking up tutorials, google questions, and troubleshooting various functions have been a large part of the process too.  The technical issues are the main drawbacks to why building the website has taken so long to complete.  Sizing images properly, and resizing images that I have already, is necessary and tedious.

In addition to the website, I have expanded my online presence on facebook and twitter, after finally getting a twitter account only three weeks ago!!  Wow, what a new medium!  It has been very difficult entering into that realm of media.  There is definitely a way in which to construct a tweet, and let’s be honest, I don’t get it.  Perhaps never will, and that’s alright by me.  The facebook updating has been very interesting as well, since that is another site that needs to be updated on a regular basis.  Another facet that can be difficult to deal with is the inconsistency of the different sites in names.  Twitter is stephosaur8, facebook is thatstephanie, and my web page is stephosaur.com.  I am trying to incorporate stephosaur into the names, and having them all match, so I am trying to get all of these sites under one umbrella.  I am also trying to get my instagram to have more pictures of my art, but most of my art is back in Michigan, so I am working on getting some better images.  This idea of having all of the social media tying together keeps me going.

Through the process, I have come to see the differences in each media and the different language that each uses.  This past weekend, I attended a creative storytelling workshop at UO’s Portland campus.   Since it was an event with both professionals and students, the student were asked to maintain an online presence during the two day class.  While I admit to being a bit rusty being on my phone during interesting seminars, I did my best at what I thought was good, quality posting.  Much to my surprise, someone from the workshop came over to me and said that I need to post more things like another one of the students- meaning that while I was indeed posting, it wasn’t in a “twitter language” and I had to try and have my posts resemble “normal” twitter posts.  This story prompts the idea that I should already know, that different social medias are vehicles for different modes of communication.  If on is not immersed or take the time to understand this communication, the lines can get blurred and the communication can lose meaning or emphasis.  I would actually like to know if anyone else has/had this problem when exploring a new social media outlet.

Website Proposal

I am very interested in web development, not only for my personal artist self, but for practical media design and functionality.  A well-designed web presence is essential for any organization or business in the modernity of today, not just a website full of information and attention grabbing images, but one that is easily navigated and simple to understand (both aesthetically and informational).  I think wordpress sites have some good groundwork for producing some nice blog-style personal sites, as well as other template web host sites.  I would like to create a website for this class.  It has been something that I have wanted to pursue since my undergrad, and more pertinent to administration, a website needs to be functional and able to accurately transcend the physical into the digital to represent the company in the right way.  As an administrator, I would make sure the website of my company was as robust as needed for an online presence.  It is my goal to learn how to create a professional site, with accurate representation.

Project Description:

For this project, designing a website will facilitate knowledge of how to create one for future careers and also to aid in fixing, correcting, or remaking an existing model into something better.  The website will be my personal artist website, including links to various other social media sites.  It is my hope to garner an understanding of online organization, graphics, and presence through this project so that I may be able to create a site for someone or some company, when needed.

Project Goals:

–       To familiarize with website design and layout and templates/themes

–       Learn how to utilize social media as a mode of marketing

–       Introduce a blog link to create a more robust interactive site

–       Learn more about online presence and interactivity

–       To become familiar with trouble shooting digital and tech problems

Strategies/Tactics:

–       Review other artist websites to gain a better idea of what they entail

–       Research hosting sites and find a modestly priced option

–       Search similar artist styles and see how those artists structured their sites

–       Research what creates a “readable” blog and how to make it current

–       Incorporate updates into the blog so others may see progression

Evaluative Standards:

–       Does the site navigate well?

–       Does it flow? Make sense?

–       Can it be found easily through other social media sites?

–       Does it represent me as an artist? And if so, can this be harnessed to create one for another company who needs an online representation?
