As the new year comes, the number 1 question everyone asks is: “What are your New Year’s resolutions?” This question haunts everyone. Why do we decide that at this random point in time, it’s a fresh start? While it may be daunting to some, I have come to love this time of year because it is great for reflection and it’s normal to start over and reinvent yourself. Last year my New Year’s resolution was to run a half marathon. It was a lofty goal but I did it and in the process fell in love with running. While I loved the challenge, I did not feel like losing any more toenails this year so I have decided for my resolutions to not be so physically demanding.
My goal for the year is to be more creative. I find that when starting creative projects I get scared of how perfect I want the finished product to be and end up not even beginning them. When in reality, my best projects have been ones that had no plan and flowed through me without pressure. To practice this cycle of creating for the process and not for a perfect end piece, I will grow not only in my work but also in how I approach big projects.
How I will do this: Every day for 75 days (still have to include inspiration from the classic physical New Year’s resolutions), I will be making one creative thing. Whether that is a blog post, a collage, or even a drawing. I wanted to share the collage I made last night here. Backstory: The gift on the top of my Christmas list this year was a Vogue magazine subscription. My mom, who used to be a journalist, was happy to give me a subscription to support writers (though I don’t think Vogue is struggling in their industry, but don’t tell her). So I decided to make a collage of the December issue. Don’t worry, I have an extra copy to keep forever. I have been wanting to get better at making collages out of magazine cuttings so this was fun to do and a good way to not force myself for it to be perfect. I am excited to see what else I make during this challenge! I hope this inspires you if New Year’s resolutions normally scare you. Thanks for reading!
