This image is a clear representation of Poseidon’s unbelievable power, and what his abilities can cause. This image shows an individual on a boat whose path is being blocked by large waves, which are clearly targeted towards this. This scenario has many questions, one being, “what could this random, clearly weaker, individual have possibly done to invoke this attack upon themself”. If you look closely into the waves, you can see that water-like horses are outlined by the dark sea water. Horses in Greek mythology are perceived as having high power, status, and money or riches. Poseidon showcasing these mystical creatures is no surprise due to his status and godlike image. The eeriness of this image I believe stems from the haunting waters, and the only light being radiated from the godlike form of Poseidon. The individual on the boat appears to be a man, which further fits the stereotypes of Poseidon provoking men specifically. Poseidon’s stance in this image is truly terrifying, as he is towering over the gigantic waves he summoned, he truly attenuates his dominating presence over others. The overall scene of this image portrays Poseidon as his usual powerful, prominent self.

The artist that made this photo makes many others involving Greek gods, and uses their personalities to shine in the photos. This is clearly demonstrated in this photo and it truly encapsulates Poseidon’s unruly behavior. Despite his hot headed ways, Poseidon is still respected by many, and I believe this is due to his status, and less so his morals accompanied by his actions. Although, Poseidon’s relentless, unforgetful behavior can also be respected due to his vengeful practice. Water typically symbolizes life, tranquility, and purification. With that also comes the viewpoint of water being rough, relentless, and unpredictable. Both are accurate representations of water, and also similar to Poseidon’s behavior. The nature of this god is unlike many others. Other gods are perceived to be more level headed, which is demonstrated in the discussion of Odysseus’ fate on staying on the island. This shows how different Poseidon’s decision making skills are, despite him being a famous, recognizable, well respected god. The research I found supports this ideology, as many people share it. There aren’t many times when Poseidon is not angry, which doesn’t give the audience much else to go off of. In the Odyssey, Homer clearly represents Poseidon’s character and his behaviors. Poseidon may have some good intentions by his actions, but it is overshadowed by his vengeful choices. The image I believe truly represents Poseidon’s character in the book.

I believe this image focuses on the water and its sheer size in order to showcase Poseidon’s power over others. I believe this image also focuses on the dark atmosphere to set the scene for the frightening attack. The feeling from this image is pure dread as the hopeless sailor is aware of their inability to stop the gigantic wave hurding at them. While being amazed by Poseidon’s power, you may not think about what issue caused this event. Was it similar to Odysseus attacking Cyclops? Did they disrespect the gods? Or did they bring this upon themselves? Many questions towards this image are shadowed by the aesthetic, and beauty of the art. I believe that it was the artist’s intention to showcase Poseidon’s power, as the image is directed to him. These strategies are effective, as they capture the audience’s attention, and allow them to appreciate Poseidon’s power, as there is beauty in it.
