Starting out with week 2, the mapping homework, it is clear you utilized the internet and researched where the Sirens could possibly reside. Through logic and research, you were able to deduce a probable location for these monsters. You have a clear understanding of the events leading up to as well as the results of this encounter. All objectives required for this homework were met and well explained. In the close reading assignment, you did very well to fully describe what happened and how it even ties in with social norms at that time. By doing this you were able to break down the full meaning of this particular book. You were also able to incorporate quotes and references from other books; by doing this, as well as having clear direction in your writings has enabled you to expand your credibility as a blog writer. It is clear that you have put a lot of thought into what you were writing about, which is why it is so easy to understand your position and ideas while reading the book. For the Image Reading assignment, you went into depth highlighting the purposeful use of specific colors, and analyzing how the women are portrayed as beautiful naked vibrant women who would lure any sailor from the dull scenery around them. Using your previous knowledge of Greek norms at that time, you were able to make assumptions about what you expected to find when looking at images depicting the book. Using the real-world context of the painting you were able to accurately and concisely portray the painting. Finally, for the Creative narrative, you did a good job of showing other real-world depictions of this monster while incorporating it back into the text. Analyzing how it would be interpreted in today’s society allowed you to allow readers to fully understand the presence of the Sirens.
Overall I think you did a very adequate job of understanding the assignment, understanding the text, and putting into words how you see their presence. By using modern societal norms to point out implied features of this monster in the reading I was able to form opinions of how Greeks viewed women back in their time. The structure of your writing was clear and to the point which is important in these responses to display all ideas you have about the readings. I would say there isn’t anything you would need to do in order to continue to provide your point of view on your specific topic. Just continue to do your reading as well as participating in the discussions during class clearly allow you to form your opinions and see the intended meanings and powers of these Sirens and I believe you will continue to produce great information on your monster and what role they play in depicting the Views Greeks have on women at that time.
