2023: A Space Odyssey

The image I used is an image of Circe using her magic wand to turn the men into pigs. In this image, you can see that Circe is a beautiful woman in a flow dress with gorgeous long hair. She is delicately holding the wand over the men, which I believe represents how she uses her beauty and delicacy to take power over men. In the image, there is a jar full of her potion on the table, which she clearly just fed the men. You can see the men, or rather, the pigs, are all looking at her in despair and anger. Some are even still turning from man to pig.

The image has very little information on it, but from what I found, it was an illustration made for Chatterbox in 1886 and was engraved by English School in the 19th century. I do believe that this image fully represents Circe and the kind of goddess she is. It shows the tactics that Circe uses, which is her beauty. She lured the men in with her looks and kindness, and then she offered them a meal and a handcrafted drink. Said drink is exactly what cursed them. If she looked like any of the evil or gross-looking villains in the story, she would not have been able to use this tactic, but because of her looks, she can. This is why the pigs are all angry and howling at her. You would not expect this from a beautiful goddess, but it still happens.

The image, which is in black and white, is used to represent Circes delicate and royal beauty. I believe the illustrator did this image in black and white, so you are focusing on what exactly is happening rather than the colors. In the image, it also has Circe in the center, stating above all of the pigs. This is done to make Circe look more powerful than the Pigs, which is made to seem true not only in this intense scene but throughout her whole story. Circe sees herself as more powerful and just better than all of the men, including Odysseus. She uses them all to uplift herself. She had no reason to turn the men into pigs, but she did so that she could feel better and more powerful about herself. This is deeply shown in this image. The pigs are small and low to the ground while she is towering over them. She is also standing with her arms open, so she looks even bigger than them. She wants to seem delicate and beautiful but also big and powerful. This is a very important part of Circe’s character and time in the story. She is a very powerful leader, but she is also soft. This is how a lot of women want to be perceived in stories like this. Although they are strong characters, they are still weak and unworthy of positions of power. This is important to showcase in this story but also in others like it.
