National Problems in South Africa

Corruption

Corruption is one major issue facing South Africa today. This issue is rooted in the countries history and remains present in the countries politics. Mismanagement of public funds is one notable case of corruption in the government. President Cyril Ramaphosa was accused of using public funds for political party purposes or personal  use. These cases are similar among other political figures and they have not been held accountable for their actions. Bribery and extortion amongst both private and public persons and entities in South Africa is another issue of corruption.

Inequality

South Africa has some of the highest rates of inequality in the world. The issue of inequality stems from racial discrimination and the legacy of apartheid and high unemployment rates. We can see the affects of these things in all sectors of the South African economy.

Poverty

Currently South Africa has a poverty rate of 40% and nearly half of South Africa’s adult population lives in poverty. This a been a major issue for some time and has only worsened since the COVID-19 pandemic. Corruption of the government, high unemployment rates, lack of access to goods and services, and food insecurity are main contributors to the issue of poverty.

Possible Solutions?

  • Strict enforcement of the law
  • More inclusive policies
  • Fostering technological advancements
  • Utilization of resources in the state
