University of Oregon thrower Ryan Hunter-Simms led all the way through the men’s discus competition Friday afternoon at the Oregon Twilight Meet at Hayward Field.
“I was just trying to push it and go for it through the first couple throws,” said Hunter-Simms. His fourth attempt was the winner, a toss of 177 feet, 2 inches.
Although it was a warm, sunny day, Hunter-Simms initially struggled to make the necessary adjustments that can play a role in the outdoor track season. He said, “In winds like this, I’ve got to keep it low.”
Pacific University’s Jesse Bethke took second with a throw of 157-0, while UO freshman decathlete Drake Brennan, competing unattached, took third by throwing 156-10.
Hunter-Simms will compete at the Pac-12 Championship meet and hopes to qualify for regionals and nationals from there.
